It’s almost become custom for Apple to launch a new device at the tail end of each year. This year’s event held on September 14, also saw the launch of two new iPhone models – the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus and Apple’s new wearable, the App Watch. For those of you who missed it, here are the Apple event September highlights.
New iPhones Unveiled
- Apple launched two new iPhone Devices iPhone6 and iPhone 6 Plus
- Both devices have retina HD displays
- Both phones are bigger than previous iPhone models. The iPhone 6 is 4.7 inches and the iPhone 6 Plus is 5.5 inches
- The iPhone 6’s screen resolution is 1334×750
- The iPhone 6 Plus’ resolution is 1920x 1080
- The iPhone 6 Plus’ keyboard has dedicated keys for cut, copy and paste in landscape mode
- The home screen on the iPhone 6 Plus also supports landscape mode with dock items located on the right
- To aid one handed usage, Apple has also added side swipe gestures for the iPhone 6 Plus, along with moving the screen lock button a little below, and a few other UI tweaks
- Apple’s also updated the Xcode engine, which now offers a much more advanced auto layout, so you can easily adjust the UI of your app for all screen sizes
- Although your app will look the same on the iPhone 6, and the 6 Plus, it is recommended that you redesign your app to take advantage of the 6 Plus’ larger display
- Both new iPhone models run on Apple’s new A8 Chip, which is a faster processor with 2 billion transistors. The new chip offers 25% faster CPU performance and 50% faster GPU performance as compared to the iPhone 5S
- The battery life of the new iPhones is much better than the iPhone 5S’ in every respect
- Both the latest iPhones also come with a new sensor – a Barometer that measures relative elevation based on air pressure
Apple Event September Highlights – Apple Pay
Apple also introduced its new payments system ‘Apple Pay’, which is a quick and secure method for paying bills from your credit card (via NFC). The new iPhones come with an NFC radio antenna via which you can send payment data to an Apple scanner device present at a retailer’s shop via NFC; using the credit card info fed into your Passbook app.
Apple Event September Highlights – Apple Watch
At the end of the event Apple also unveiled its new smartwatch, the Apple Watch. The key takeaways from the Apple Watch presentation are as follows:
- The Apple Watch will launch in early 2015
- There will be three types of watches available – the standard Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sports edition, and an 18-karat gold Apple Watch Edition
- There Apple Watch will come in 2 sizes with an easy to use interface
- Its GPS and WiFi will work with the iPhone
- It will enable users to monitor and share their heart rate and other fitness stats
- It will also enable users to draw and share simple diagrams as well as audio messages
- Apple did not announce the screen resolution for the Apple Watch
